Eat Well Play More Tennessee Worksite Wellness Summitt

Many of you will remember Dr. John Lacey's presentation to our group earlier this year. The Tennessee Obesity Task Force is offering a free Worksite Wellness Summit on May 24th from 10:00am-4:00pm.

Some of the topics include:

Why offer wellness programs
Begininng a program with no budget and justifying your investment
Legal considerations for wellness programs
Real world examples of successful programs

2012 Day on the Hill and Symposium

We had a great turnout on the Hill. Charlie Weaver, Chuck Terry, Darlene Tucker, David Stamps, Greg McNair, Jamie Day, Jim Malone Joe Lacher, Jonathan Frish, Justin Forton, Leigh Ann Moore, Lewis Penfield, Paul Carson, Paul Heard, Phillip Johnson, Richard Girdler, and Carolyn Kaeser Linn met with TN Senators, Representatives, and our own Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey.

This years Issues & Answers Symposium and Day on the Hill were a great success! We have added some new website content under the Quick Links section on the upper left hand side of the page. You can now watch live Senate and House of Representative sessions as well as previously held sessions. In addition, you can also search for your elected officials. We would like to thank all of our Sponsors, Speakers, Members, and Non-Members for attending and participating in this years event. We will post pictures in the next couple of days. Last Thursday the Middle TN Association of Health Underwriters had a great speaker! David Meador and his wife Connie were a blessing to our group and it helped us as a club and as individuals put our life and our careers into perspective. Please mark your calendars! If your business or sales force needs a little inspiration to jump start your 2nd quarter, you do not want to miss our next Middle Tennessee Association of Health Underwriters meeting.

Our guest speaker will be David Meador. David sees life and business from a unique perspective. He lost his eyesight in an automobile accident at age 18. After training in Braille and mobility skills, David quickly returned to college. He earned a bachelor's in Business Communications from Southern Illinois University and a master's in Industrial Relations at Loyola University of Chicago.

In 1982, David began a 20-year career in sales with Northwestern Mutual Life in Nashville. Most people felt selling insurance could not be done without sight. Despite the skeptics, he qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table and set the Nashville Agency record of 572 consecutive weeks of production. That's bringing in new business every week for eleven straight years!

David is a National Champion in Blind Golf, a recent winner of both the Masters of Blind Golf and the National Blind Golf Championship, and has to his credit three holes in one! He received the Kaia Jergenson Courage Award from the Nashville Sports Council in 2003, and is currently serving as president of the United States Blind Golf Association. His two greatest victories, however, came in 1972 and 2002, when he beat cancer both times.

In January 2011, Dr. Lacey was appointed by Governor Bill Haslam to Chair a new commission on Tennessee Health and Wellness. The goal of the commission is to define a dashboard for the health of Tennesseans and work to improve health metrics.

Dr. Lacey is also the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Physician Award presented by the Tennessee Medical Association House of Delegates.

“This group’s mission is to chart a course to promote and support healthy lifestyles for Tennesseans with the ultimate goal of healthier citizens, reducing the burden of chronic disease on our state,” Haslam said. “The task force will focus on meaningful ways to promote healthy choices and personal responsibility to decrease rates of illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.”

University of Tennessee Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. John Lacey III is chair of the 16-member task force that will:

Focus on the top preventable causes of chronic disease and disability in the state
Develop metrics to measure success;
Identify promising strategies
Serve as advocates for change
Form partnerships and garner resources necessary to reach established goals.

The next MTAHU meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 5th at 8:45am.

We are excited to announce that Representative Joshua Evans, Secretary of the Tennessee House Health and Human Resources Committee, will visit with us to discuss the upcoming legislative session. Most legislation relating to health care is referred to the Health and Human Resources Committee, so this is a great opportunity for us to ask questions and voice our concerns about our industry at the state level.

In addition, we have a large delegation of officers from Tennessee that will be attending NAHU's Capitol Conference in Washington, DC later in January. Since this is such a critical year for our industry politically, we would like to spend time brainstorming with our membership on things you would like to see addressed with our elected officials in DC.

We know this is a busy time of the year for everyone, but we hope you will make every effort to attend this important meeting:
